Changing the Direction of Your Life

If you are currently unhappy with your life, I promise you have the power to change it. To make significant lasting change in your life takes about a year. The start of the cycle of change usually starts at a really low place and having the energy to hope can be hard to come by, but hope is exactly what’s needed most. Hope creates motivation, and that is why once you have decided that your current life is not working for you that we need to daydream about a life that would. As we age, we tend to lose our permission structure for dreaming and fantasizing about our lives. However, daydreaming is an essential part of well-being and hope creation. Even if we are happy with our lives, it is positive thoughts about the future not just the present that keep us feeling good and moving forward with positivity.

Cultivating and capturing what an improved life will look like requires creativity that is most easily unlocked in the fantasy space. Spending more time in our fantasy space with a positive mindset of “what would make me happy” will create the hope that is necessary for us to grow towards that future. Generally speaking, the space between where we are and where we want to be is usually smaller than we think. What stops us is usually our desire to limit how much we’re suffering. If we can embrace that increased suffering now, then we can move forward. The way that your suffering will increase is in change. Change sadly is usually quite painful. When we want to change we need to move out of our comfort zone and into the unknown. That can be the second biggest hurdle in improving our life.

Once we have hope on board, embracing the pain of change can act as a catalyst for forward momentum. For every thing we want to change in life, there is a pathway with a mechanism that will allow us to move towards our most optimized self. For example when it comes to work, finding multiple platforms to look for other opportunities can really change the experience of being a job seeker. If you want to stop working for others and be self employed, making a financial plan and working 7 days a week is usually the most efficient path in making that change. Ask yourself: what are you willing to endure to change? Because change is so painful, I recommend making a 12 month plan with small incremental changes that move your towards your desired goal. Doing 1 new thing a week is usually manageable for most people. Deciding on what that new thing will be is down to selecting a starting point for change. What is the most urgent issue you are facing? Once you know the answer to this, you can focus on this one issue and start working the problem by selecting 1 new thing a week to incorporate in your life. Doing this will put you on the path of personal growth and goal attainment.
