Finding Your True Calling

Finding your true calling is about living your most authentic life and being purposeful in everything you do. This involves a variety of steps, and the first one is to own your truth. What are your central truths about yourself that you like? For example, at my core I believe that everyone deserves to have more good days than bad, including me. My calling to be a therapist comes from a place of selfishness. I wanted to share the things that I do in my everyday life to have more good days than bad because there was a time when I did not think that was possible for me. Your calling will be something you feel passionate about and may not be something you can monetize. I feel that one of the biggest drawbacks of social media is the belief that everything should be monetized, and sometimes the goal of monetization can ruin a calling by killing passion.

Our calling does not need to be what we do for work. It is actually very rare that a person’s calling is how they make their living. If you are one of the lucky few who have a clear path and desire to monetize your calling, and that does not kill your passion, then go for it! Understanding that how we make our money may not align with our true calling and most authentic life is the next step. The freedom to seek out our own joy will reveal our passions in life. For some people, their callings involves engaging with others and for some it does not. Your deepest passion does not need to be altruistic and can be completely self-serving because this is about you and your happiness, so get selfish. If you were being total selfish with your time, what would you be doing? If your calling is watching Netflix and zoning out, that’s valid and embracing it will make you so much happier.

As human beings, we will have a level of variety that is needed to keep us balanced, hopeful, and engaged with our life. This is true even about time spent fulfilling our passion and engaging with our true calling. I love being a therapist, but I also love going to art museums and hanging out with friends. If your calling is collecting hot wheels, watching Netflix, or volunteering, that is what you do to bring passion into your life. It cannot be the only thing you do. It should not become a mandated activity that you must do a specific number of times a week. Instead, it should be something you are aware of and do your best to work it into your schedule. If you are able to monetize your passion, it should not be the only thing you do. Be mindful of what the start costs are for monetization and new employment. New things take a lot of time to start and in the beginning, things will be out of balance. Keep this in mind and then do your best to take time to step away and recharge. Sometimes in life, we need permission to pursue our own happiness and find our passion. This me giving you that permission.
